Line Grapefruit is a tricky Flash "path" game

linegrapefruit
Okay, see that snaking line coming in from the right on the screenshot? That's you. And see those large round circles? Those are supposedly grapefruits, only they won't sit still - they keep moving up and down and cutting across your path. And if you touch one, you die!

That's what you have to deal with in Line Grapefruit. But that's not all - you're also on a time limit. In fact, you have a very limited amount of time to make it through the "path" (for lack of a better word). You need to snake your way through the winding trail without touching anything. The good news is that a grapefruit only kills you if it touches the end of the line - once you've made it past the grapefruit, nothing happens if it crosses the path you've made.

This is not an easy game, but it's quite unique - I can't recall seeing another game quite like it.

Microsoft releases sexy Bing app for iPad

It's still a bit odd seeing Microsoft deliver apps for Apple's mobile platform. And it's even stranger still to see one as sexy as the new Bing app for iPad, which brings a slick, immersive search experience to Apple's tablet.

Just as a regular search on bing.com will, the Bing app for iPad tailors the results it displays based on what you're searching for. There are loads of custom views, covering everything from movies and maps to weather and shopping. The app also offers a heads-up display of currently trending searches, complete with related images, which is an iPad-exclusive feature.

Navigation is a breeze thanks to multitouch controls, allowing users to flick or swipe through results. And while the development team refers to the app as "touch and decide," Bing Voice Search is also built in -- making it easy to start a query without using the iPad's on-screen keyboard.

The Bing app for iPad is available for download now from the App Store.

YouTube Cosmic Panda experiment adds darker UI, lots of spit and polish

YouTube Cosmic Panda
It's a more rounded and sports a little more chrome than Google's recent redesign efforts, but the new YouTube Cosmic Panda experiment does bring the darker UI elements and polished feel of Google+ to the video sharing service. This is much more than a fresh coat of paint however, navigating the site is a much more interactive experience now and you can continue to watch videos as you search and browse -- provided you're using Chrome. Channel pages have also been completely overhauled with large images for each video, several layout templates, and easier to use customization options. Playlists have also been revamped and now bear more than a passing resemblance to Leanback. The one thing missing at the moment is integration with Google+ and the new navigation bar, but we're sure those features will be added eventually (and if they're not, then the Goog has really dropped the ball). You can opt in now by heading to source link.

Mitsubishi i-MiEV goes cheaper and further in Japan, scores 112 MPGe in the US of A

Mitsubishi i-MiEV
We're still waiting for our first i-MiEV deliveries here in the US and in Japan they're already prepping new variations on the tiny electric car for the 2012 model year. One, the M, goes the budget route, slashing 1.38 million yen (about $17,000) off the price of the 2011 model. It does sacrifice some range, 40km worth, to meet that price -- you'll need to plug in about every 120km (75 miles). A second option, the G, weighs in at 3.8 million yen (almost $47,000) but boosts the between charge range to 180km (110 miles). The M will start appearing in Japanese showrooms on July 25 and the i-MiEV G will follow in August. Meanwhile, the American edition, known as the Mitsubishi i, is edging ever closer to release. The all important EPA tests are out of the way, and the i scored the equivalent of 126 MPG in the city and 99 on the highway for an overall rating of 112 MPGe, about 20 MPGe better than the Leaf. Check out the pair of press releases after the break.

Google demands veto on OEM Android changes, stretches definition of 'open source'

Google, according to reports from "a dozen executives working at key companies in the Android ecosystem" is finally locking down the open source and easily-fragmented Android operating system.

As it currently stands, Google hands over the 'final' code for each version of Android, and OEMs and developers then spend some time customizing the OS to fit their hardware, and to create a unique and marketable flavor. That's all set to change, however.

Over the last few months, according to several people familiar with the matter, Android licensees such as HTC, Motorola and Facebook, have been asked to sign 'non-fragmentation clauses.' This new contract caveat will give Google the right to review and pass judgment on all changes to the Android OS. Two executives at Facebook say that they're unhappy that Google gets to review its changes to Android -- which is understandable, given Facebook and Google are direct competitors -- and there have also been allegations that Google is preventing some Verizon devices from shipping because they include Microsoft's Bing instead of Google search.

Apple iOS 4.3.4 software update may fix iPhone hole, block PDF jailbreak

Remember that PDF exploit from last year that JailbreakMe 2.0 was using to unlock your iPhone with just a few taps? Well, Apple patched it. And now it's apparently back. According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple acknowledged the exploit, and is working on an update at this very moment. In addition to the JailbreakMe 3.0 hack that came to light last week, the hole can also be used for some not-so-noble efforts, like grabbing your contacts database, accessing saved passwords, or activating your iPad or iPhone's built-in camera. And nobody wants that. For one reason or another, German authorities have taken the lead on encouraging Apple to investigate, and have also warned all users to avoid opening PDF docs from untrusted sources. And we're happy to echo that rather solid advice, given the implications. Ironically, JailbreakMe includes a patch for the very hole that allows it to function in the first place, so if you're terrified that rogue PDFs will take over your devices, that's an option to consider in the meantime.

Watch 30 Timelapsed Mornings of Glorious Chicago Sunrises [Video]

If it's been years since you've been awake early enough to watch a sunrise. If you're a time-lapse nature junkie. If you know how beautiful the sun-kissed Chicago skyline can be. Doubly so if you don't. These are the first few reasons why watching Craig Shimala's Good Morning Chicago should be mandatory. There are at least 30 others. More »

Motorola Droid 3 up for order, helps to usher in Verizon's new data plans

Motorola Droid 3 up for order, helps to usher in Verizon's new data plans
What better way to open a new era of limited, tiered data plans than to bring it on back to the QWERTY slider that had a huge part in starting the Android revolution? That phone was the original Droid and now its grandchild, the Droid 3, is out of the nursery and up for order on Verizon's page. Full-price is $459.99, but on-contract it'll set you back a quite reasonable $199.99. For that you get a 1GHz, dual-core processor, 16GB of storage, 4-inch qHD display, and an eight megapixel camera around the back. To get it you'll need one of Verizon's new data plans, which start at $10 monthly for 75MB and go on up to $80 for 10GB. Oh, sweet unlimited data, we're missing your soft embrace already.

Update: We've added the official PR after the break. Looks like this one won't be making an appearance in stores until July 14th or so.

[Thanks, Wyatt and Peter]
