Andy Hertzfeld, 'former Macintosh wizard,' designed the Google+ Project

Google+ looks... a little different. Almost as if it didn't even come from Google. And those drag-and-drop circles? Luscious. Turns out, there's a reason for everything, and he goes by Andy Hertzfeld. According to an investigative piece put up by Wired, Andy's actually credited as being the "original Mac guy," responsible for software and user interface design while working for Apple between 1979 and 1984. He picked up a new role at Goog in 2005, but according to the report, "he had previously felt constrained because its design standards didn't allow for individual creativity." That all changed with Emerald Sea, a diddy that would eventually become known as the search giant's most ambitious foray yet into the wide world of social networking. It's bruited that Andy was given the freedom to go wild whilst designing Google+, and it shows -- the interface throughout is about as intuitive as one could ever hope. 'Course, it takes more than good design to seal a project, but there's no doubt that this is one heck of a start. The rest of the story? Tucked away in that source link, just south of here.

It Appears the Twitpic Founder Twitpicced His Own Arrest [Twitter]

Tweeting "Getting arrested...in the back of a cop car now," Twitpic founder Noah Everett followed it up with the pictured Twitpic, offering it as "proof" of his situation. Thankfully he didn't Twitpic the reason why he got arrested: "...I guess you can't walk down your own street half naked...who knew - I got a free ride home by the nice police officer," elaborating that "...by half naked, I mean naked." iPad 2 Stylus Reviews

The iPad presently only provides blunt-tipped iPad styluses, much like the tip of a Sharpie marker. The screen is a multi touch capacitative technology making it majorly responsive to human contact or touch and also proves to be less sensitive to fine-tipped styluses. Companies are selling thick-tipped styluses that provide basic pen-like features for drawing [...]

The Royal Society wants kids to make graphene, puts the miracle material in games

Graphene GamesIf we were more musically inclined we might write a ballad singing the praises of graphene -- the magical material that can be used in everything from super-fast CPUs to ultra-efficient solar panels. Sadly, the truth is, we're bloggers and not rock stars for a reason, so we'll just entertain ourselves with the Royal Society's Summer Science exhibition on the carbon nano-structure instead. From July 5th through 10th the London-based science center will run a major hands-on exhibit where participants will get a chance to see graphene under a microscope and create their own single layers of of the stuff with nothing more than a pencil and some scotch tape. If getting to the Trafalgar Square-adjacent academy is out of the question, you can always fire up the promotional and educational Graphene Games, which you can download for both Android and iOS at the more coverage links.

Microsoft-led consortium to trial super WiFi network across the pond

British mobile bandwidth hogs won't have to curb their data enthusiasm anytime soon if a scheduled 'super WiFi' trial minds it manners. Led by Microsoft and backed by the UK's biggest TV providers, this roided-up wireless network surfs along the spare 150MHz spectrum that terrestrial television avoids. Christened the 'white spaces,' networks abroad (and in the US) maintain these unused frequencies to prevent signal interference, but with MS' Dan Reed calling spectrum "...a finite natural resource," operators don't have much else to mine. Set for testing in Cambridge -- chosen for its dense cluster of buildings old and new -- this repurposed TV signal walks through walls its weaker mobile brethren smack into (at up to 16Mbps, no less!). With a similar British Telecom rollout already underway in Scotland, we'd say the tech has an imminent Anglo-future -- pity the US can't seem to unravel the red tape fast enough for a homegrown build-out.

iSites overhauled, now lets you publish cloud-based HTML5 iPhone apps in minutes

iSites -- a zero-code cloud-based 'app creator' -- can now generate HTML5 apps that work on iOS devices. With this new feature, dubbed 'InstantApp', you can now design a single app in your browser and publish it natively on Android and iOS, and as an HTML5 iPhone app.

We haven't looked at iSites before, but it shot to fame last year when it launched with native iOS and Android support. Self-publishing Android apps wasn't a problem because Google does very little moderation of the Market, but iSites ran into trouble with its iOS apps. Thousands of people signed up for the service after it was featured on Mashable and TechCrunch, and you can imagine Apple's chagrin as thousands of cookie cutter apps flooded its approval queue.

Genwi, the developer behind iSites, realized something had to be done -- it had to circumvent the App Store approval process. Genwi, of course, turned to HTML5 Web apps -- which can be pinned to the iPhone home screen and which can be shoehorned into almost behaving like native apps.

Read on for our experiences with iSites' new InstantApp HTML5 iOS app creator.
